We're the Martin Family. We moved to Fairhaven in 2004 and had been dreaming of opening an ice cream shop in this town ever since. This is our second year as your ice cream destination. Our family history includes running homemade ice cream shops in Cape Cod. We are proud to pass down this tradition to our children JP, Andrew, Eamon, Maggie, Xander, Declan, & Brendan (and our goldendoodle, Lucy).

The BBA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit youth organization.  Basketball leagues, sand volleyball courts, basketball & volleyball clinics, private training and open court time.   We serve the children of the South East region...any town, any city...all are welcome!

The mission of the BBA is to provide a safe and wholesome environment for the youth of Southeastern Massachusetts and neighboring Rhode Island communities.   An environment that is free from the harsh elements of drugs and gang activity. An environment where athletic, cultural, recreational, educational and social development thrive.   A “bully free” environment. An environment that promotes diversity and individuality and endeavors to instill self-esteem and self-worth An environment that prepares our children to stand strong in a society where temptations are rampant  An environment that provides the tools to aid our children in coping with day-to-day stresses & the strength to say "no" to unhealthy choices.

HISTORY OF THE BBA

The B.B.A. league was formed in the summer of 1994 in the back yard of Steve Burgo's South Dartmouth home. Upon deciding to build a basketball court, complete with lights, his original intent was to provide a safe environment for his sons and their friends to play ball.  The court's popularity spread quickly and soon a basketball league was born.  Seventy-two participants formed eight teams of nine players each, complete with officials and formal rules. The league quickly expanded and out grew it's backyard beginnings.  We moved the BBA to a new home which is known as "The Complex" and is  located at 101 Slocum Road, in  North Dartmouth, Ma.    The Complex is a regional facility and serves the entire South coast.  The league attracts players from surrounding communities such as New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Wareham, Freetown, Rhode Island and as far away as Connecticut. The only requirements for joining the league are a desire to play ball and respect for the league, officials, other players and the neighbors. Games are held Monday through Thursday evenings, June thru the first week of August with trophies presented at the end of the season. An entry fee of $125.00 per player (youth division) is charged to offset expenses such as referee & scorer fees, electricity, shirts, trophies, supplies, repairs, maintenance and facility improvements.

Melissa Viera Aka “MJ,” is a dog trainer and owner of MJ’s Pet Training Academy, LLC who is dedicated to using a positive and supportive approach to help dogs and handlers discover the joy of training together. Melissa believes in providing a place where all people are welcome to enjoy training their dogs.

At MJ's Pet Training Academy, we offer fun incentives that keep our students motivated, such as league points. However, our most important goals are to see people succeeding with their own dogs, training their dogs amazing things they didn't think possible, and supporting each other throughout their training.

We believe in fostering a community of positive people who enjoy training with their dogs. Our mission is to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where every dog and handler can thrive. This is the home for fun dog stuff and positive people who share our passion for dog training.

We are committed to helping owners navigate problem areas or train their dogs fascinating new behaviors and advanced obedience. Whatever your goals are, we want to support you. We also offer professional dog grooming, dog nail care, professional consultations, and other services. We carry a small selection of training gear. Meet Melissa "MJ" Viera, CPDT-KA: A Passionate Proprietor and Trainer at MJ's Pet Training Academy

Melissa combines her deep understanding of canine behavior with a creative perspective to come up with unique training angles for addressing a number of behaviors. She believes that every dog is unique and requires an individual approach to training. Her unique training and teaching style involves using a wide variety of techniques. She also emphasizes the relationship between dog and handler as a key component of success.

Her extensive experience working with dogs began at a young age, raising Labrador puppies, showing in junior showmanship, and competing in AKC obedience. While attending Bristol County Agricultural High School, she balanced her studies in small animal science with training for obedience, earning an AKC CD on her “Novice A,” dog, “Riley,” an English Cocker Spaniel, and offering grooming services. She was also active in the FFA organization. Soon after graduation, she began offering professional training services, before going on to open the first location of MJ’s Pet Training Academy in 2013 in The Acushnet Plaza.

Her vision for opening a business was to be able to offer something of value to the community while sharing her passion and expertise.

In 2021, the business moved to a larger location on Titleist Dr. in Acushnet to be able to offer even more classes and events for dogs and their people.

Melissa is dedicated to serving the dog owners in her community and growing MJ’s Pet Training Academy to ensure dog owners have services they can rely on, and access to the latest techniques and options for fun activities with their dogs.

Melissa is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed, CGC Evaluator, APDT member, Certified Trick Dog Instructor, AKC FIT Dog Instructor, and Temperament Test Evaluator. She holds an AKC Poodle Grooming Certificate and has studied behavior through various schools and methodologies with certificates in many areas of study. Melissa is dedicated to continuing education.
